"The Family of Man" is known as the "greatest photo exhibition of all time". It was conceived in the 1950s by the American photographer and head of the photography department of the "Museum of Modern Art", Edward Steichen.
After a ten-year world tour, the exhibition was offered to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in 1964. Since the mid-1990s, it has been on permanent display at the Clervaux Castle. The historical arrangement of the photographs from 1955 was taken into account. Since 2003, the exhibition has been part of the UNESCO World Documentary Heritage.
"The Family of Man" paints a portrait of humanity and emphasises that people are part of one big family, without concealing the differences. The images deal with 37 different themes such as love, belief in humankind, birth, work, family, education, children, war, and peace. Steichen's intention was to show the universality of human experience and emotions on the one hand, but also the enormous capacity of photography to reveal these similarities and communicate them to a broad public on the other hand.
Since its creation, "The Family of Man" has attracted more than 10 million visitors, becoming part of the history of photography as a legendary exhibition.
