once upon a time
This photo series features sculptures created from retro-style everyday objects and fine glassware. They reflect the standard of living of a bygone era and were mostly sourced from flea markets. Traditionally, these items were given as gifts for engagements, weddings or birthdays. Today, they are regarded as old-fashioned and often as worthless. They have been stripped of their original function and are therefore useless. Their transparency emphasises a void, a time that has stood still and been lost, and evokes a world of memories with a certain sense of nostalgia. The objects are staged like a still life.
The sturdy yet fragile crockery embodies the illusion of permanence and the deception of the object by freezing memory in time. As remnants of the ‘Trente Glorieuses’ and a showcase of the customs of that era, these new objects speak of the dead end of a consumer society, the failure of human relationships and the loss of loved ones.
