A Historic Building

Cornelyshaff is part of the village’s history. Originally a traditional farm, it later became a wood trading office. Between 1850 and 1880, when a wave of Luxembourgers decided to emigrate, Cornelyshaff was transformed into an emigration office to the United States. Indeed, the agricultural crisis was severe in the country, and Luxembourgers were attracted by the American dream and free farmland in the Midwest. Between 10,000 and 12,000 Luxembourgers mainly moved to Iowa or Illinois, representing nearly 5% of the population at the time.

Later, Cornelyshaff became a “colonial goods store” (Colonialwaren und Delikatessen). Although this term has disappeared today, at the time it referred to fine grocery stores specializing in products imported from European colonies. These included coffee, cocoa, cane sugar, tea, spices, rum, tobacco, as well as luxury items like wine and jams from France or Germany.

It was later used as an agricultural cooperative for local producers, before being transformed into an inn with its own microbrewery.
